Alex Lobos focuses on design, technology, neurodiversity, and emotional attachment as means to elevate quality of life. At Rochester Institute of Technology, he is Director and Professor of the School of Design, Fellow in the Arts at the Center for Teaching and Learning, and Extended Program Faculty at Golisano Institute for Sustainability. He is also a Research Fellow Emeritus at software company Autodesk.
Alex leads a top-ranking School focused on interdisciplinary collaboration, technology exploration, and applied design research via Graphic, Industrial, Interior, New Media, 3D Digital, and Visual Communication Design. Alex and his students have collaborated with Autodesk, AT&T, Colgate-Palmolive, General Electric, Makerbot, Staples, Stryker, Unilever, and others, in areas such as learning futures, generative design, digital fabrication, sustainable behaviors, neurodiversity, and everyday living. He lectures and teaches throughout North and Latin America, Europe, and Asia. Alex is the recipient of the Industrial Designers Society of America Education Award, the Autodesk Design and Make Award for Community Leader in Design and Manufacturing, and the Eisenhart Award, RIT’s highest recognition for teaching excellence. He has been a juror for the International Design Excellence (IDEA) Awards, Core77 Awards, and the Ibero-American Design Biennial. He holds two international patents and has been an industrial designer for General Electric.
Alex was born in Guatemala, where he started his career as an industrial designer, and moved to the U.S. as a Fulbright scholar. He holds a MFA from the University of Notre Dame and a BID from Universidad Rafael Landivar. He loves playing drums, long-distance running and spending time with his family.
